Vintage Barbie items are sought after by collectors and can sell for insane prices on eBay. Really, what are Barbie clothing and accessories other than some tiny strips of fabric and pieces of plastic? As Baby Boomers continue to downsize and have estate sales, these types of items are coming out of hiding and can sell for far more than the average person might think.
A little history on Barbie:
Mattel and Ruth Hadler created Barbie in 1959 and the concept was an instant success. The doll was inspired by Ruth's daughter named Barbie, as an alternative to playing with paper dolls. Over the decades, Barbie became a symbol of beauty, elegance, and pop culture. Vintage Barbie dolls, clothing, accessories, and cases are treasured by collectors because of the representation of the clothing and trends of the era. As society, styles, and trends changed over the decades, Barbie changed, too.
True vintage Barbie dolls and clothing are considered to have been made from 1959 - 1966. (Although by popular definition, vintage is anything 20 years old or older.)
Collectors refer to Barbies made from 1967 - 1972 are considered Mod Barbie Dolls. These Barbies had long hair, long eyelashes, bendable legs, a twisty waist and a more updated wardrobe. She also had friends named Stacey, Julia, Christie, PJ, Steffie, and Kelley.
The Standard Barbie Doll was released between 1967 and 1970. Her hair came in shades of blonde, brunette, and red. This was also known as the Budget Barbie. There is much more to the history of Barbie and even some books published on the subject.
The lot of clothing recently sold on eBay for $449 was a 1960s lot of dolls, clothing, shoes, and cases. It was noted as an estate sale find and some of the items were not in perfect condition. A collector may have purchased this lot to part it out and resell the individual pieces.
