Vinh Heng Market: Inconspicuous auspiciousness

This Cambodian market stocks a wide variety of Asian food supplies, from Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and the like. And like a number of the markets in Cambodia Town, Vinh Heng’s small size and unremarkable strip mall location belie the amazing diversity within.

Although lacking the wall-length butcher’s counter of some markets, numerous freezer and refrigerator units offer preparations such as fresh sweet bean dishes (green, white, or black), Asian sausage and anchovy flavored pork patties, frozen quail and river bard fish, and frozen Durian Mornthong.

Fresh fruit and produce is available in abundance, including chili peppers, basil, cucumbers, daikon, ginger, green tomatoes, Chinese broccoli, bananas, mangos and limes, among many others.

Dried mushrooms, dried bael fruit (from Thailand), dried peppers, jackfruit chips and shrimp chips, and seasoned dried cuttlefish can be found near extensive selections of canned fruits and vegetables, along with jars of pickled garlic, makok, jujube, lotus rootlets, banana blossom and preserved mudfish. Nearby is an assortment of fish and squid sauces and shrimp pastes, along with a seemingly endless collection of soup and sauce mixes.

Dried spice, noodles and grains are all on display, as are quantities of instant noodles, and you can find different brands of pate next to the teas and tea crackers. And the boiled salted duck eggs are just across the aisle.

Imported toiletries are also available, as is one of the better joss paper kits locally available.

Two areas in which Vinh Heng excels are their selections of beverages and sweets. Row upon row of fruit drinks, health drinks and energy drinks far outnumber the soft drinks here, both cold and on the shelf. These include drinks made from basil seed, white gourd, grass jelly, pennywort, lychee, aloe vera, pomegranate, tamarind and mangosteen, with other offerings including the Nice Look Drink, a “healthy” beverage made from white fungus, birds nest, rock sugar and vanilla.

The assortment of delicious candies counts Chunguang Durian Candy from China, Hong Yuan Classic Series Candy – Guava Flavor (Chaoanxianhongyuanfoodsco., Ltd., China), Sword Fish Brand Banana Candy (Keo Chuoi Tuoi, from the Industrial Zone in Ho Chi Minh City), and Ritz Sweet & Delicious Macapuno (Gelatinous Mutant Coconut) and Langka (Jackfruit) Candy from the Philippines. And although a number of the packages look to have had a lengthy shelf life, as they’re largely concentrated sugar in individually-wrapped portions it’s doubtful they’ll expire any time soon.

Ranks up at the top of the Asian markets on Anaheim, right alongside An Dong and Seng Heng.
