At 2 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 25, 2013, Wyandotte city councilman Daniel Galeski, along with representatives from the Wyandotte Business Association and Wyandotte City government cut a ribbon to open officially Vinewood Mexican Bakery and welcome new owners Luis and Xochil Aguinaga.Pictured, left to right, are Luis Aguinaga, Lizeth Aguinaga, Xochil Aguinaga, Councilman Daniel Galeski, Scott McBeth (Wyandotte Business Association), Mikelle Vargas (Wyandotte Business Association), and Natalie Rankine (City of Wyandotte).
Vinewood Bakery had been a landmark in the city for almost 100 years before it was closed and put up for sale in 2011 by the Bogoevski family, which had owned the business since the 1970s. The business was acquired by Luis Aguinaga and has actually been operating since Sun. Oct. 20.
Luis Aguinaga brings a long tradition of baking to the new enterprise. In his native town of San Ignacio in Jalisco province, Mexico, the Aguinaga family were bakers. Most recently Luis was a principal baker at La Gloria Bakery in Detroit.
Luis and Xochil were attracted to the business opportunity because of the location--right across the street from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel--and the neighborhood. "This is a good neighborhood with good people," Xochil said. "The site is really great."
Vinewood Mexican Bakery is really a family enterprise. In addition to the owners, five other members of the Aguinaga family also work in the business, including brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, said family member Lizeth Aguinaga. Without the hundred-percent dedication of the family, Xochil said, the business would not have worked.
The new bakery offers traditional Mexican breads--including the famous pan de muertos, designed for dia de los muertos celebrations. Also offered are empanadas, cookies, doughnuts, turnovers, cakes, and pies. During Epiphany, they'll also offer rosca de reyes, the traditional Mexican Twelfth Night cake.
Vinewood Mexican Bakery is located at 988 Vinewood in Wyandotte, Michigan. It is open for business seven days a week: Mon.-Sat. 6 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sun. 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Visit their Facebook page or call (313) 610-4274 for more information.
