As crazy as the thought may sound, Dana White confirmed in an interview on Friday night with Canadian sports channel RDS that Vince McMahon proposed a bout between the two. Luckily for all of us, White said he declined.
Of the phone conversation White had with McMahon, White recalls, "Vince wanted to fight me. Swear to God. Called me up and said, 'Let's do it.' We can either do it in the UFC, or let's do it at WrestleMania. And I said, 'You are crazy.'"
We all know that Vince McMahon, owner of the WWE, is crazy enough to fight anyone and that is why we love him. At the same time we also know that Dana White is smart enough to pass up a fight with McMahon and that is why we love him.
During the interview White did reiterate his respect for McMahon. "I always have said it, and I'll say it again; I respect Vince very much. But Vince is too old to be fighting anybody."
The likely bout between the two could have taken place at Wrestlemania 27 as the co-main event to John Cena versus The Miz. That was reported by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer back in 2011.
Of course for the UFC, cross promotion with the WWE could discredit what respect the UFC has garnered over the passed decade. The WWE being 'sports entertainment' or at this point just simply 'entertainment' is not the image the UFC is trying to cast. The UFC is a sport and continues to grow it's reputation as a legitimate sport. Mixing the two would likely bring down the reputation of the UFC as far as their legitimacy is concerned.
Last year, the UFC allegedly turned down an offer to have Brock Lesnar fight for them while also working for the WWE for that very reason.
Either way a potential bout between Dana White and Vince McMahon is fun to imagine.
