Vince Gill is an icon in country music and has won numerous awards and honors. That did not stop the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting his appearance at the Muriel Kauffman Theater to promote his new CD, "Bakersfield."
The Westboro Baptist Church protested his appearance on Sept. 8 as Vince Gill promoted "Bakersfield," and Saving Country Music reports that the offense committed by Vince is that he is married to Christian music artist Amy Grant. Both Vince and Amy were divorced before marrying each other.
While the Westboro Baptist Church protestors shouted “Vince Gill, what in the world are you doing out here? More importantly, what are you doing with another man’s wife?”
Vince Gill decided to walk out amongst the protestors and an anti-Westboro bystander taped the incident with a smartphone. The bystander caught Gill telling the protestors that he came out “to see what hatred really looked like in the face”
One female protestor from Westboro Baptist Church shouted at Vince Gill, “Don’t you know that divorce plus remarriage equals adultery?”
The country music singer/songwriter responded the protestor was lucky she did not have any signs that said anything about his wife, Amy Grant. Gill also called one protestor a “dipsh**t.”
Vince is currently promoting his new CD “Bakersfield” with steel guitar player Paul Franklin. “Bakersfield” has the duo covering songs from Merle Haggard and Buck Owens at the height of the Bakersfield Sound days.
