The Vigo County Retired Teacher's Association wants to start a gun buyback program. They still need permission from the city's legal department and the police department.. If the VCRTA receives the necessary permission, they will hold the event at the Meadow's shopping center on April 13, Mywabashvalley.com reported Thursday.
VCRTA and the THPD will pay $10 for each air pistol and BB gun and $100 for each firearm turned in.. The organization will hold the event at the Meadows shopping center on Poplar Street. Police officers will also collect prescription drug disposal program. They will dispose of andy medication and destroy any firearms collected..
A spokesperson for the VCRTA believes that taking more guns off the streets will make the city's children safer, although he did not elaborate on why this would occur. The buy back program is similar to programs in Chicago, but the city's violent crime rate remains high.
The gun buyback program was not the only local response to the Sandy Hook Elementary incident. Terre Haute Police Chief and John Plasse proposed putting officers in all 24 schools in the Terre Haute area at the February 11 city council meeting. The school board passed this measure unanimously.
A similar gun buyback took place in Seattle earlier this year. Gun collectors showed up and offered to buy more money for the guns than the police department. A few enterprising individuals have suggested this plan.
