About the Vigo County Fair

The Vigo County Fair began before the American Civil War as a small ag exhibit site. In 1867, the Indiana State Fair was held at the Terre Haute 4 Corners Racetrack, according to the fair’s website. The grounds where it takes place on south Third Street was established about 65 years ago. Major improvements were made in the 1980s, making the Vigo County Fairgrounds a modern place for families to visit and 4-H’ers to participate in the many activities each year. More building updates were made in 2012, including increased air conditioning. The Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, home of the historic Vigo County Fair also is home to the Terre Haute Action Track and Dragway.

Vigo County Fair Parking Fees this year were $5 per car after 4 p.m. and $5 per person walk up after 4 p.m. Camping was available at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds for the popular event. Camping under the Outdoor Pavilion for limited events was $25 per night, campsites with electricity $20 per night and campsites without electricity was $10 per night.

The 85th annual Vigo County Fair ended with a 4-H Achievement Night awards ceremony, which drew a large crowd. As exhibitors packed up to head home, it was clear they were proud of their achievements. Even the commercial and food vendors expressed contentment on the conclusion of the fair. One food stand operator from Connorsville said he already has reservations for the same spot next year. He noted this is his 23rd year selling food at the fair. Popular treats at the fair are lemon shake-ups, corndogs, funnel cakes and sati babis.

The weeklong event provided something for everyone. Music, entertainment, carnival rides, carnival food favorites and several 4-H activities. The line-up of rides by Drew Exposition this year included thrill rides Ion and Cyclops. A new ride this year, Vertigo, made its debut on the fairgrounds. The ride is said to be the largest set of transportable swings. For the less adventurous, Century Wheel,Tornado and Seattle Wheel. For children, popular rides are Rockin Tug and Carousel. There were also several games providing challenges to winning an assortment of prizes.
