Fox Hill Memorial Tower in Henry Park, photo's by Jeff Burke
The City of Rockville has this area that is so enchanting where you can see all of the entire northern part of Connecticut valley with a view all the way to Springfield MA on a clear day and from the tower you almost see all of Hartford's tallest towers from here. You need to get here at the right time, to be able to climb the Fox Hill Memorial Tower here in Henry Park. Free Admission, hours are Wednesday 6 PM until dusk, Saturday and Sunday between 1-4 PM, please bring your camera. It is a beautiful stone monument to the Soldiers, Sailors and Marines who protect are country. The tower was created by the hardworking men of the Workers Progress Administration and sponsored by the City of Rockville and the Town of Vernon in 1939; we can all thank them by paying a visit to this wonderful piece of history on Labor Day.
Stunning by itself and beauty abounds all around you, rolling hills, beautiful park grounds to stroll. You can take your long distant photo shots where no one can get in your way for the kind of scene you envision in an old photograph. The downtown is an inviting target for photos, as it's picturesque setting and old fashioned town square surrounded by brick buildings and stone churches make it quite pleasant. No need to park at the bottom, you can drive right up to the base of the tower, park and then walk around even take a picnic basket. Just sit for awhile and admire the joy of being high above the town of Rockville. Take a walk beneath the dozens of ancient oak trees, marvel at 200 year old trees still standing after centuries of bad weather. Then settle down on one of the benches or picnic tables and don't forget to bring your best friend.
You can find this easily, take exit 61 off I-84 follow Mile Hill toward Rockville, turn left on to route 30, then right on to South street. Henry Park is on right, enter near the McCoy baseball field and drive to the top of the hill. Park in the parking area at bottom hill for a spectacular walk or drive to the top for the most wonderful vista you can only imagine, then park along front of tower or near walkway to tower.
