Saturday night, the Senate voted that the health care reform bill move ahead with floor debate. The current cost of the 2,000 plus paged bill is $848 billion.
All 58 democrats and 2 independents won the Senate vote, and ended with a 60-39 vote. The 2 independents that supported the measure were Senator Joe Lieberman (CT) and Bernie Sanders (VT).
39 out of 40 Republicans opposed the motion, and Senator George Voinovich (OH) didn't vote.
"Tonight's historic vote brings us one step closer to ending insurance company abuses, reining in spiraling health care costs, providing stability and security to those with health insurance and extending quality health coverage to those who lack it," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
Democrats spent most of Saturday defending the bill to Republicans and said that at the expense of the American families insurance companies are getting richer.
Republicans said that Democrats are pushing a bill that will increase premiums, raise taxes and force the government to ration health care to Americans.
"Today we [decide] whether to even discuss one of the greatest issues of our generation," Senator Reid from Nevada (D) said. "Whether this nation will finally guarantee its people the right to live free from fear of illness and death, which can be prevented by decent health care for all."
