Dr. Drew Pinsky of VH1's Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, Celebrity Rehab, and Sober House visited the women of The View recently to discuss how the disease of addiction effects women.
Women, he said, tend to hide their addictions and secret them, going more for pills and alcohol; whereas, men are not quite as secretive as a rule. We refer to men alcoholics and addicts as "hard drinking" and "old boy," but women are judged harshly and labeled with words like "lush: or "tramp." We reserve a special bitterness for women in this disease, says Dr. Drew.
It is very common for the more serious addicts (with habits extreme enough to lead them to Dr. Drew) to have some sort of child abuse or childhood trauma in their backgrounds -- nearly 100%. Not all addiction is caused by childhood traumas, but the more serious addictions are usually traced back to childhood problems. Traumas "shatter the brain's ability to regulate" and changes the way the brain develops. Many times people reach to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to regulate their emotions.
