On Tuesday morning's Howard Stern Show broadcast, Stern said that comedian Will Ferrell "hijacked" Conan O'Brien's final Tonight Show with a lame bit in which Ferrell performed a full length version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" in redneck garb.
"I'm telling you Will Ferrell hijacked Conan's last show. That's all," said Howard Stern, then went on to add: "If I went on Letterman and did that I'd never be invited back again." The final performance followed interviews with Tom Hanks and Steve Carrell and a performance by Neil Young.
"I've been around comedy my whole life. I've been responsible for comedy. It wasn't funny to me--that's all," said an irritable King of All Media.
Howard Stern Show sound man and King Norris frontman Fred Norris agreed: "I think the bar just keeps getting lowered on what real entertainment is. I was listening back to it. It was bad singing. It was bad playing. What was funny about it?"
Many fans lashed out at Howard Stern for criticizing Conan O'Brien's last show after turning down the opportunity to appear on The Tonight Show and share his vitriolic feelings toward Jay Leno, and then implied Howard Stern was simply "too old" to understand Conan O'Brien's humor:
"Well, evidently the entire country is too old to understand Conan's humor," said Stern referring to O'Brien's abyssmal ratings before the late night controversy went full tilt.
