Toyota announced Tuesday that the recall of hybrid models is on and that it includes the 2010 Prius. The problem is in the anti-lock braking system and it has been said that it is a computer glitch.
"We do apologize for the inconvenience and concerns we've given to the customers," President Akio Toyoda said. "Quality is our lifeline for Toyota."
The recall was announced in Japan, and a US recall is expected to be filed later today. The 437,000 cars will be added to the list of the vehicles Toyota has already recalled and over 8 million cars will now need to be repaired. The Toyota Prius, Sai (sold mostly in Japan), and Lexus HS250h will be included in the recalled list of models.
Sales of the Sai and Lexus HS250h have been halted until they figure out a way to fix the cars.
Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it opened a formal investigation into the 2010 Prius braking problems, after 124 Prius owners filed complaints.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Toyota in California on Friday over the Prius brake problem. Toyota announced last week that the dealerships began to fix the recalled vehicles. For more information on that story, click here.
The problems with Toyota and the recalls over the past few months creates an opportunity for other dealerships. "Every dog has his day," said Jerry Seiner who owns several General Motors dealerships in Salt Lake City. "Maybe they'll take a second look at us instead of Toyota...when Toyota stumbles it's our opportunity."
Toyota had a 47% drop in sales from December after the recalls were announced. For more on that story, click here.
