Tiger Woods emerged from hiding on Friday morning to make a televised statement apologizing to his wife, his family, his sponsors and his fans for the sex scandal that rocked the entertainment world last fall.
During the statement, Tiger Woods referred to himself as "deeply selfish, irresponsible and foolish." Woods spent nearly six minutes apologizing to specific family members, friends, business partners and charitable organizations he was involved in, and then moved the focus to asking for privacy for his family.
"I have always tried to maintain a private space for my wife and my children," a bleary-eyed Tiger Woods told the small, hand-selected crowd of family and friends in Ponte Vedre, Florida. "I understand people have questions. I undestand the press wants to ask me about the details of the times when I was unfaithful. I understand people want to know whether Elin and I will remain together. Please know that as far as I'm concerned, every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me. These are issues between a husband and a wife....Please leave my family alone."
The View co-hosts spoke about the Tiger Woods press conference during Thursday morning's "Hot Topics" segment. Coffee table matriarch Barbara Walters said that Woods was "very smart" to give a statement rather than holding a press conference where he would take questions. "
"The press keeps saying he should do an interview. No!"
Whoopi Goldberg offered the beleaguered superstar golfer a bit of compassion. "Tiger, whatever you're going to do. Good luck man," she stated.
Barbara Walters offered grandmotherly advice: "Move on and live your life the best you can after this."
