Video: Stephen Colbert report on Utah gay couple arrested for kissing on Mormon Church property

On Thursday, Stephen Colbert ran a short story about a gay couple that was arrested in Utah for trespassing on LDS Mormon Church property. In July, a gay couple walked down Main Street, a street that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) purchased a few years ago, and they were arrested for trespassing. They were holding hands, and one of the men kissed the other on the head, and had his arm wrapped around his partner. Several LDS Church security guards stopped them, asked them to leave, and when they asked what they did, they were arrested (see video below).

The Mormon Church arrested Derek Jones and Matt Aune for criminal trespassing, not for being gay, according to LDS Church documents that stated they were “lewd, profane and groping.” There is no mention in the report that the couple was gay.  A few days after they were arrested, other (straight) couples were kissing in the same area of Main Street, but they were not approached by LDS Church officials.

Matt said: “I was busted because I was gay, and my partner gave me a kiss.”

Although the video below is a funny representation of the story, the story is true. They were arrested, and the charges were later dropped.

This news is so old it's not news - in fact it never was. Just another sorry attempt to discredit the church.

Please, Pete, the LDS church does enough to discredit itself already! They level of hypocrisy and fables with that denomination is astounding... I should know too.

The Church. What church is it?
