Richard Heene breaks down and cries during apology in court for balloon boy hoax (see video). Richard Heene made a public apology in court on Wednesday morning, before he was sentenced. Heene was sentenced to 90 days in a work release jail, fine and restitution, four years probation and is restricted from earning money off the “balloon boy hoax”.
It is estimated that the fines and restitution may cost upwards of $50,000 for the police and emergency officials that followed the balloon for over two hours through the Colorado sky in October.
Richard Heene said "I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there and the people who got involved in the community."
In October, the world watched as a small weather balloon floated across the Colorado sky and it was reported that a 6-year-old child might have been inside. As it turned out the boy was hiding inside the house, and the Heene’s created the hoax in hopes that they would land a spot on a reality TV show. Police and emergency officials were called out from all over the state in an attempt to rescue the balloon boy. Now the parents will have to pay restitution for the emergency officials.
