Many more people have begun to object to the planned Koran burning event at a Florida church, and today President Obama directly chimed in with an appeal to the church pastor to not follow through with his plans. On Good Morning American (video below) President Obama called the rally a "stunt" and explained how the public burning of the Koran could endanger United States troops overseas. The President also argued that the event runs completely "contrary to American values" and could be a "recruitment bonanza" for al-Queda.
The Obama administration has made known their views before, but this is the first time the President has directly given his input. Last week the controversy grew when General David Patreaus, head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, urged the Florida church to not burn the Koran. Gen. Patreaus pointed to protest in Afghanistan over mere rumors of a Koran burning, and stated that the rally could endanger the lives of American troops. The White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs agreed with Patreaus' assessment and his appeal.
Since that time, and after some pressure from the left, a number of prominent conservatives and Republicans have made known their opposition to the Koran burning rally. Included are the Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, who called the event "unwise" and argued against it. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) seemed reluctant to comment on the situation, but after some prodding from an interview did say the event should not be held, while also comparing it to the "Ground Zero mosque" initiative. Finally, Sarah Palin has even expressed opposition to the Koran burning event, but Palin also made sure to compare the burning of Koran to the "Ground Zero mosque." It seems some conservative believe building a mosque and burning a Koran are both equally offensive.

Despite the appeal of President Obama Pastor Jones has given no indication of backing down from his plans. Jones clearly comes from an extreme right-wing perspective, so an argument from President Obama is unlikely to be persuasive to him. Pastor Jones has said he respects President George W. Bush, but thus far the former President has not commented on the controversy.
Even if the President's public appeal does not stop the event it still serves a larger purpose. By making such a public appeal the President is attempting to make clear that the large majority of the country, and his administration in particular, are opposed to what Jones is doing. In the protests over the Koran burning in Afghanistan last week, many of the protesters actually called for the murder of President Obama. More residents of the Middle East, who live under much more authoritarian governments, do not understand why the government can not simply stop Jones from holding his "Burn a Koran" rally. The concepts of freedom of speech and religion are foreign concepts to many Muslims. By making his statements, the President at least attempts to explain to other countries why stupid people are allowed to do stupid things in America.

The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.
Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.
"The decision was made that it was a 'force protection' measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims," Wright told CNN on Tuesday.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.

The Bible burning was specifically to obey the UCMJ and US law and to protect the troops.
The Koran burning is intended as a deliberate insult to Muslims, clearly puts the troops at additional risk and hinders the mission in Afghanistan.
I think the point is that not a peep was heard when bibles are burned but the whole world comes to halt if the Koran is threatened. Both acts are horrible and should never happen no matter what the reason behind it but I can understand how some people might see a bias here, how you can do what you want to Christians but some how Islam is free from any kind of scrutiny, fair or unfair.

Burn the books, don't burn the books, but at the end of the day it's your right to have a barbecue with whatever literature you see fit. The arguments from people saying "what if it was a bible burn" are irrelevant, since contrary to what many christians in america think, "american" is not synonymous with christian, and we all don't care whether or not someone doesn't agree with what it says. I do agree that many muslims in the middle east are angry over this, but where in the past has progress come from stopping something because of an irrational threat of violence? Civil rights would have ground to a halt, women would still live in the kitchen, and pretty much anyone else in history who was persecuted would have stayed that way if everyone had adopted the "let's not rock the boat" philosophy. A book burning, a flag burning, an angry poster, a passionate speech; it's all fine as long as it does not explicitly make a call to violence, and as short sited and hateful as Pastor Jones is, he is doing nothing wrong, and the day we stop him is the day we stop being free, as hard as that might be for some people to accept.

You’re wrong. Christians everywhere are offended when their most sacred book is treated with such disregard. While it is technically a “book”, that book is much more. Rather than being burned the books could have been returned to the sender or offered to Christian military personnel. Instead, the burning treats the book as common trash – a foolish mistake.
Christians are tired of the Muslim hypersensitivity demonstrated throughout the world, while radical elements of that religion run about enacting heinous crimes against peoples and countries.
The "gross over-reaction" is found in the administrators of countries, who with fear and trembling, have catered to Muslim extremists. Have some backbone world leaders – there is nothing to fear from these religious thugs. Ensure there is equal respect provided to all religions and deal harshly with those enacting heinous crimes against peoples and countries in the name of their religion.
