Austin post-rock act my education has released the final video from their 5 Popes reissue that dropped in February on Beat Imprint Records. The entire album was remastered for the re-release. The video was made for the song, "Deep Cut" which originally was released in 2004 on Thirty Ghosts Records. The live band footage which features original members from the roster when the album was made was shot by former Austin Chronicle film critic Mark Savlov.
The clip begins with an aerial, 360-degree view of the Austin skyline in black and white that segues into black and white live band footage. A lush, cinematic theme emerges as the viewer watches the Nathan Guy directed video that lends the aura of a live performance. The shots of the band playing live were appropriately produced by Savlov back in 2002, two years before the album was released. The viewer gets to listen to early my education material while watching footage of the band from the same time period.
The 5 Popes reissue has enjoyed good press since being released. Joshua Pickard of Nooga.com paticularly enjoyed the reissue of the album. We like it here at Examiner.com along with their latest release, "A Drink for All My Friends" on Haute Magic Records. The limited edition CD sold out but there are still a few copies of vinyl available.
"Deep Cut" and "Crime Story" fall somewhat into the same pattern as the previous songs, but there's a spark of life and originality that keeps them feeling familiar while always slightly elusive and out of focus. And it's this inability to fully explore each song on first listen that makes "5 Popes" so wonderfully enigmatic and memorable. The answers are there, buried deep in the mix of guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, and My Education isn't giving them up without a fight."
