Video: Paul Shirley Haiti comments shouldn't get him fired

Former NBA star Paul Shirley received some support from an unlikely source after he made comments criticizing the Haitian people for their plight in the wake of the worst natural disaster in the country's history.

Paul Shirley wrote a post on his personal blog entitled "Dear Haiti" which stated: "As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?"

Paul Shirley signed the letter from "The Rest of the World."

The View co-host Joy Behar stated her belief that Paul Shirley shouldn't have been fired from his job blogging for ESPN because of the comments.

"See, too me the guy is obviously a moron to write this sort of thing but I still don't think he should be fired for free speech....He's not allowed to say something like that? It's outrageous what he said and it's stupid. It's really stupid. It's really ignorant. It's like saying that the guys at Pearl Harbor were responsible for the bombing because they happened to be at Pearl Harbor, or the Holocaust is the responsibility of the Jews, but don't fire the guy for stupidity. In my opinion, he's allowed to speak. I'm very strict on the first amendment."

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg had a lot less sympathy for Paul Shirley. "This is pure ignorance," said Goldberg. "This is about people who don't have Jack."

So was it a personal blog, or was it through ESPN? If the latter, then free speech has nothing to do with it.

I got fired from my blog too just because my name is similar to this bastard's.
