An out of control Toyota Prius exceeded 90 mph before police stop car in San Diego. Monday, a Toyota Prius owner called 911 and reported that his gas pedal was stuck and his car was out of control on a San Diego freeway. With the help of the highway patrol, they were able to stop his vehicle.
CNN was able to speak to James Sikes, the shaken Toyota Prius owner a few hours later, who said that he will not get back into the car. Sikes said that he tried everything to get the car to stop, he stood on the brake, he checked to see if his floor mat was stuck, and he pulled on the emergency brake.
The California Highway Patrol said that the car was going over 90 miles per hour, and that they could smell the brakes when they came up on the car on I-8 in San Diego. See the video below for James Sikes explanation of how they stopped the out of control Toyota Prius.
Toyota sent a representative to San Diego to investigate the cause of the incident. The government has also sent several investigators to San Diego to inspect the Toyota Prius involved in Monday’s incident.
Since 2004, Toyota has had 56 fatal accidents that claim and out of control sudden acceleration problem.
Previously, Sikes called Toyota to ask if his 2008 Toyota Prius was on the recall list and he was told it was not. Toyota has recalled over 4 million Toyota vehicles since November because of sudden acceleration problems.
The problems with Toyota and the recalls over the past few months creates an opportunity for other dealerships. "Every dog has his day," said Jerry Seiner who owns several General Motors dealerships in Salt Lake City. "Maybe they'll take a second look at us instead of Toyota...when Toyota stumbles it's our opportunity."
Toyota had a 47% drop in sales from December after the recalls were announced. For more on that story, click here.
