As if gamers did not have enough mediums to turn to for streaming content, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will be receiving access to a new service this year. Yesterday on the Official PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Senior Vice President of Business Development, Phil Rosenberg, confirmed that PS3 and Vita owners will be able to download the subscription based streaming service, EPIX, sometime in the near future.
EPIX provides its users with the ability to stream anything from movies and television shows to recorded concerts. With services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime available on Sony’s systems, there’s ample reason to question the need for yet another streaming service. EPIX is owned by Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate, opening up programming that is normally unavailable otherwise. Of course, there is always a catch, and with EPIX, subscribers must be members of one of a septet of television providers that includes COX, Dish, Mediacom, and Verizon.
According to Rosenberg, PlayStation 3 owners can expect to see EPIX available for download during the first quarter of 2013. The service will be making its way onto the PS Vita later on in the spring.
