On August 25th, the MTV Video Music Awards were held in Brooklyn, New York. The red carpet at such an event tends to be a mix of musicians, actor/singers, and some actors thrown in as well who present awards or likely got an invite so they could watch the show. As musicians’ fashion statements tend to be more off-the-wall than actors, the looks are often clearly just attention-grabbing.
A few of the actor/singers who went to the event were Jennifer Hudson, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Hyland, and Allison Williams. Jennifer Hudson showed just a little bit of an edge with a black leather pencil skirt and houndstooth strapless bodice. Sarah Hyland, who often looks so lovely at events, made a misstep in a very overly ruffled and unflattering burgundy and gold dress. Shailene Woodley also looked somewhat “off” in a tight black crop top with a sparkly and fringed miniskirt. She may have been able to save this outfit with a proper blouse; but it didn’t seem to go with this particular event. Allison Williams didn’t stray from her girl-next-door looks and went with a long-sleeved white minidress.
A few of the singers highlighted in the accompanying slideshow are Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and Ashanti. Katy Perry wore a fitted leopard print dress with high thigh slit and gold butterfly appliques around the neckline. Lady Gaga channeled the character Morticia in an all-black dress and long black wig. Miley Cyrus, who it seems will do anything just to try to grab attention or shock people these days – wore a crop top and leggings with random beaded embellishments, her hair in top-knots, extreme platform shoes, and stuck her tongue out her mouth every chance she could. We get it, Miley, you’re no 14-year-old Hannah Montana anymore – you don’t have to get as naked as possible and sexualize yourself every time a camera is on you. Ashanti wore a teal dress showing a lot of leg and torso – somewhat reminiscent of a look Jennifer Lopez might wear.
The VMAs aren’t where we find high fashion or a lot of beauty in style; but they do offer some entertainment in a laughable way. It’s interesting to see how naked certain performers try to get onstage (talking to you, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus!); and the odd fashions on the red carpet.
