Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins is making a statement.
She's nude. Un-photoshopped. And smiling ON the cover of Marie Claire's latest issue.
The February Australian issue of Marie Claire magazine shows Jennifer Hawkins with "flaws" and notes that studies show only 12 percent of women are truly happy in their own skin.
""I'm not a stick figure," says Hawkins in the interview. "I thought it would be great to tell women to just be themselves and be confident."
But the cover took an interesting twist when Marie Claire readers showed outrage at the editor's choice.
The Huffington Post quotes one reader as saying: "She wants to make [women] feel more comfortable about how they look, gee thanks, I now feel worse! I'm a size 10 and I still have more rolls than her!" and "If anything is going to have me running to the toilet with my finger down my throat it's a picture of Jennifer Hawkins naked."
PRADA says opera cast members too curvy for fashion designs
But the magazine's decision-makers explained their reasoning: "The thing is unfortunately it doesn't make the same point, because Jennifer sells magazines and she creates awareness. If Marie Claire had chosen to put on their cover an ordinary women, say myself or a friend of yours, it would not have created the awareness it does."

Everyone's upset because Jennifer says she wants to show what "real women" look like. She looks healthy. Just because most women are overweight doesn't mean that she should hide her body and be ashamed. It seems it's the girl who doesn't wear a 10+ that's being descriminated against. Not the ones who overeat and don't exercise.
HEATHER SO YOU'RE BASICALLY SAYIKNG YOURE A AHTER AND I SHOULD NOT CARE ABOUT MY ROLE MODELS BC IM FAT? SO SURE YOU THINK THAT ALL WOMEN SHOULD LOOK LIKE A MISS UNIVERSE
I think all women (and men) should aspire to a healthy lifestyle. Our genes will determine whether we look like miss universe. She just didn't want to be airbrushed because she knows that she has flaws, and while she may be thin and fit, I'm sure she works hard everyday. The point is, women don't have to be overweight to be "real".
