Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, was killed from a shark attack yesterday about a quarter mile off the coast of Florida while kite surfing. The lifeguard in the area said he was surrounded and attacked by sharks. The lifeguard put his body on a rescue board and paddled him back to shore. Schafer died later at the hospital, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
The lifeguard put Schafer on his rescue board and paddled back to shore, he said that Schafer had several shark bites and lost a lot of blood. Paramedics took Schafer to a hospital where he later died. Officials said that Florida swimmers receive minor shark bites, fatal shark attacks are very rare. See the video below.
Since 1882, there have been 610 unprovoked shark attacks in Florida, and of those 13% have been fatal, according to News-Press.com.
Researchers have developed a level scale of shark bites called a Shark-Induced Trauma Scale, bites are evaluated on a scale of 1-5 with level 1 being a small cut and level 5 being the worst amount of physical damage done. This scale helps people from lifeguards, to hospital employees, to the media to explain what kind of physical damage has been done to the patient.
