As angry as conservatives were over health care reform, liberals seem to have been awakened by Arizona's immigration law. Last night, Jon Stewart gave his own take on the law and illustrated the ultimate fallacy behind the law.
Under the law, local law enforcement officials are required to ask someone for identification if they have "reasonable suspicion" that the person is an illegal immigrant. If the subject does not provide proper identification they can then be arrested on the spot.
When signing the bill, the Arizona Governor claimed that she would not allow racial profiling to be used to enforce it. However, critics were left to wonder how the bill would be enforced without resorting to racial profiling. As Stewart illustrates, law enforcement are almost certain to rely on some form of racial profiling in establishing "reasonable suspicion" required to ask for identification.

The law MIRRORS the Federal law and specifically says race CANNOT be used as a sole factor.
Yeah, right. That's why sheriff joe has been hit with so many civil rights lawsuits already and why the federales took away his power to make immigration arrests.
How many Canadian Snowbacks you think the fuzz are going to stop?
Laughing Chimp. Did you read the bill? It's only 17 pages. You can read that much can't you?
Interesting to see the violence now being instigated and perpetrated by the left in AZ ... rocks and bottles thrown at police, threats of "burn this city down", defacing of public buildings with swastikas, fingers pointed "gun like" at police ...
the federal law hasn't stopped Sheriff Joe from having his goons arrest hispanic citizens and hispanic legal residents on 'suspicion' of being illegal. what makes you think the same language in the state law will make a difference?
Has that Great American Sheriff Joe been found guilty by any of those nuisance suits brought by illegal aliens?
only about $43 million worth in settlements, judgments and fines, nameless.
because they weren't illegals; there actually are citizens and legal residents of hispanic descent living in arizona, but sheriff joe don't care: 'if they brown, shake 'em down.'
Laughing Chimp says: only about $43 million worth in settlements, judgments and fines,
Illegals cost AZ 1.5 billion a year.
GO JOE!
but joe's price is for maricopa county alone.
and is that $1.4B in wages? or $1B in services? or $1.3B for education, medical care and incarceration?
antis can't even agree on the costs, much less figure out if there are any bennies.
Got something to say?
