Jimmie Johnson did it again. Johnson scored his fifth victory of the year Sunday winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Lenox Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Johnson took the lead late in the 301 lap event, but with seven laps to go Kurt Busch taped Johnson’s Chevy and slid past and into the lead. Johnson was able to fight his way back and after giving Busch a taste of his own medicine was able to charge past on the final lap for the win.
Busch was then bumped by Tony Stewart who was able to get past for second, Busch finished in third.
"My incentive was not necessarily to pass him," Johnson said of the charge back to Busch. "All I needed to do was to get to his bumper. He gave me that option by moving me out of the way. I just sat there and as I put together a good lap or two I saw that I caught him and I thought 'this is going to work out just fine, I'm going to get there with one or two [laps] to go and if I get to his bumper, I know I'm going to make the turn.'
"So I just took that approach, got in there and of course I calmed down once I got to him, just gave him a nudge and went on my way. But the laps leading up to that I had great visions of a huge spectacular crash."
There were no late race cashes however and Johnson was able to secure the 52nd win of his career and his second in a row.
Jeff Gordon was fourth behind Busch while Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five and was able to maintain his points lead heading to Daytona.
