Jay Leno appeared on Oprah and discuss Conan, Letterman and NBC. Thursday, Jay Leno appeared on Oprah to talk about the Tonight Show, NBC and Dave Letterman. After the NBC time slot battle with Conan O’Brien, many people are curious to hear Leno’s side of what happened. And Oprah get’s right to the point and asks Leno the tough questions. She speaks about how he has been portrayed as selfish in the media and what Leno has to say about that.
On Jay Leno’s January 20 show he said: "Letterman's been hammering me every night." "Oh, going after me. Hey, Kevin, do you know what's the best way to get Letterman to ignore you?... Marry him. Okay? That's the best way. He will not bother you. He won't look you in the eye. No problem at all."
Oprah played a short video clip of the joke and asked Leno: "Did you laugh when you heard it?"
"No, I did not," she replied. "No, I did not laugh....I thought, whoa. You know what? I thought that was beneath you, actually. I thought why did you step into that?"
Leno said that Letterman hit him first as a way of defending himself.
"But how many jokes like that have I done?" he asked. "One. I did one joke in the middle of the week and I never did another one, because I said, there, I had a cheap shot thrown at me, I threw one cheap shot back and I moved on."
"I did, I felt really bad for Conan," Leno said. “I think it was unfair. But it was unfair for me."
Leno has stated that Conan O'Brien leaving the "The Tonight Show" wasn't his fault and that it was the low ratings the Tonight Show has had since Conan took over.
"It had nothing to do with me," he told Winfrey. "As I say, there is always someone waiting in the wings in this business to take your job. If you're not doing the numbers, you move on, it's that simple."
Leno told Oprah that he still hasn't spoken to Conan O’Brien.
The Tonight Show airs nationwide at 11:35 pm on week nights. In Utah, the family oriented state, the Tonight Show has always aired earlier at 10:35 pm. The Jay Leno show airs at 10 pm nationwide, but at 9 pm in Utah.
