Melody Thomas Scott has been living the drama of a soap opera heroine for more than 35 years as “The Young and the Restless’” Nikki Newman. Her character’s history on the #1 CBS drama is extensive and is in true soap opera diva fashion with some of the most common soap plots happening to Nikki over the years. As of 2014, Nikki has killed three people, been married 11 times, battled drug and alcohol addiction, worked as a stripper and was even once Genoa City’s town hooker with a “heart of gold.”
As “The Young and the Restless” viewers know, Nikki’s most heartbreaking secret has come to light. Her long lost son, Dylan (played by Steve Burton) who she gave up for adoption after being kidnapped and raped by his believed to be father, cult leader Ian Ward, became ill with a live threatening illness, Nikki and the town learned that Dylan was really her child with longtime friend and former lover Paul (Doug Davidson.)
The revelation has rocked Nikki and her loved ones to their core as evil Ian is now tormenting Nikki emotionally. He even had the nerve to file an emotional distress lawsuit against her. Just last week, Nikki’s love Victor (Eric Braeden) overheard Nikki tell Paul that if she had known Dylan was his son, she never would have given him up. Dylan is also out of sorts finds out that he is being called as a witness in Ian’s suit against Nikki. Paul’s love Christine (Lauralee Bell) wonders if Nikki having a son with Paul will affect her relationship with him. Meanwhile, Ian taunted Nikki causing her to explode.
Daytime TV Examiner caught up with the iconic actress at the Creative Daytime Emmy Awards. The show ended up winning the top prize this year, the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The show received six Emmys in all, including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and took home three of the acting awards for Scott's cast mates Billy Miller (Outstanding Lead Actor), Amelia Heinle (Outstanding Supporting Actress), and Hunter King (Outstanding Younger Actress).
In the video interview, Scott talked to me about her thoughts on her character’s legacy as one of the last veteran soap opera heroines still actively on screen. The actress also shared some of her craziest encounters with the show’s loyal and passionate soap opera fans.
