Ron Hornaday was having a good day. After starting on the pole for Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Mountain Dew 250, Hornaday was leading his first laps ever at the 2.66 mile oval.
A week after he won for the first time at Martinsville, NASCAR’s shortest track, Hornaday looked to be in a great position to win at NASCAR’s longest track for the first time in his career. With only three laps to go however, disaster struck.
While charging through the tri-oval, rookie Grant Enfinger tapped Todd Bodine from behind sending him into a spin. Bodine then careened into Mike Skinner and the chaos began.
In the melee, Hornaday’s truck was sent flipping starting with a front end pirouette and ending with a slide on the roof and several tumbles near turn one before finally coming to rest upside down. As the truck came to rest, Bodine was there checking on his competitor and friend.
“It’s a shame that things like that happen,” said Bodine, who finished 18th. “[Enfinger] just gave me the shot from hell. He turned me sideways, and it caused a big wreck.”

Rescue workers carefully righted the truck before a smiling Hornaday climbed out.
“That was unbelievable; I don’t know who even clipped me,” Hornaday said. “It’s too bad we ruined a really good truck.”
