I interviewed Tim Samaras about three years ago when he agreed to show me his storm chasing TWISTEX truck. You can read that interview (here). He was never a hot-dog or a publicity-seeker. He was a man of science and was careful about his approach to storm tracking.
He was a nice guy too.
Tim Samarras was 55, his son Paul was 24-years-old and their friend Carl Young was 45 when they perished in pursuit of an F-3 tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma. So far, 10 people lost their lives from the tornado on Friday, May 31st. El Reno is located 25 miles west of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Jim Samaras, Tim's brother wrote on Tim Samaras' Facebook wall: "It truly is sad that we lost my great brother Tim and his great son, Paul. Our hearts also go out to the Carl Young family as well as they are feeling the same feelings we are today. They all unfortunately passed away but doing what they loved."
The video attached was recorded three years ago by The Fast Lane Car in conjunction with the story I published.
My condolences to the Samaras and Young families.
