Haiti gets hit with another 6.1 earthquake aftershock. Haiti was struck with a substantial earthquake aftershock this morning, a 6.1 was the largest aftershock that Haiti has received since the 7.0 earthquake over one week ago. Buildings were shaking and many people were too afraid to stay in their own homes and living on the streets, ran away from buildings for fear they might get caught in the rubble. This morning’s earthquake was located about 35 miles northwest of Port-au-Prince.
Wednesday’s aftershock occurred at a little after 6 am. On Monday, a 6.0 earthquake hit Guatemala, and four other earthquakes under a 6.0 in the area hit Tuesday and Wednesday.
Haiti has approximately 9 million people and is a mostly desperately poor country. In 2008, the mayor of Port-au-Prince stated that about 60% of the buildings there were built poorly and were unsafe under normal circumstances. An estimated 45,000 Americans are estimated to be in Haiti.
The Salt Lake City based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has responded and said that no missionaries from the US are in Haiti, but that an immediate relief project has begun to provide aid.
