The liberal community seems to have caught Glenn Beck in a lie, and Beck has responded to the revelation as he typically does. At his "Restoring Honor" rally Beck when into great detail about his last visit to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. Beck described to his audience how he, "held the first inaugural address written in his own hand by George Washington."
The claim seemed suspicious to many, since access to historical documents like the inaugural address is usually restricted to a select few with specialized training. A subsequent inquiry from reporters at Mother Jones magazine found that Beck had not held the documents as he claimed. Instead, Beck was allowed to "peak inside" the vault holding the documents, but not actually hold the address as he claimed.
Yesterday Beck responded to the story as he usually does. After admitting that he lied, Beck proceeded to belittle the story and mock those who reported on it. Beck claimed the story was no big deal, and justified his fabrication by saying he "thought it would be a little easier" to tell the story as he told it.
The problem with Beck's defense is that this particular detail was a big deal when he told the story. Beck held Washington up as a man of honor, pleading with the children in his audience to become the "next George Washington." When telling the story Beck made much out of the fact that he actually held these precious documents. In addition, many lies make things "easier." Honesty is ultimately about telling the truth even when it makes things harder.
This pattern is typical for Beck, who will at times admit his mistakes, or outright lies, only to claim that the error did not really matter. Perhaps the most infamous case came with Van Jones, the former "green jobs" adviser for President Obama. When attacking Van Jones, Beck made much of the fact that Van Jones had supposedly been convicted of a felony. Numerous bloggers, including myself, disputed this claim, pointing out that Van Jones had been arrested but never convicted of any felony (a significant distinction). However, Beck continued with the smear campaign, and eventually the hysteria he created forced Van Jones to resign. Four months later, Beck would admit that he was wrong about the conviction, but also note that his lie really did not matter.
Lies like the Van Jones conviction and inaugural address story are important to Beck at the time he uses them, but then seem to mysteriously lose their meaning once the lie is exposed. Beck essentially admits the lie, but then gets away with saying his pattern of lies do not really mean anything.
George Washington honor was at least partially attributed to his reputation for honesty. If Beck wishes to "restore honor," it seems that he should be held to the same standard of truthfulness.

WOW, Glen Beck is not allowed to touch a 200 year old plus document, with his own hands. Really, who would have tunk it? He had the document held by employees of the Archive and read it. Having humans touching these documents, without proper care would destroy them. This is documented. Let's break down these lies -
1) "I am not a Muslim" - Barack Obama is not a Muslim, he is a Christian. We've been over this again and again.
2) "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." We all know Clinton was a pervert... but does this affect ability to govern? Either way, his infidelity has little to do with the economy, which boomed under Clinton's leadership.
3) "I'm not going to tax the middle class." - I'll assume this is another Obama thing... you DO know that 98% of Americans received a tax break last year, right? "Liberal" media... this is a joke. FOXNews, who I'm sure you watch, has, basically, NO liberals working for them. That's slanted media. To assume that all other media outlets are liberally-biased can only lead to one of two conclusions: either there are so many more liberals in America that no conservatives can establish a majority in media, or that conservatives simply don't have the education, or language skills, for journalism. This pales in comparison to the lies we hear from this administration that are far taller and far worse and affect millions of people. Beck speaks endlessly five days a week, you caught him twice giving misinformation, hardly worth writing an article about. Why don't you put that energy towards this president or congress? In fact why don't you find out who has been flying back and forth from CA to DC in Pelosi's plane (aside from her) and how much that has cost all of us.
I got that chain e-mail about Pelosi's plane also and it smelled fishy - it seems that the "facts" were hugely exaggerated. She does not have a private plane. She is "required" to fly military because she is second in line for the presidency (Bush procedural security measures) She has averaged one trip per month. She requested a plane that could fly non-stop from Washington to San Francisco for security reasons. She is not allowed to fly commercial because of her position so her family travelling with her is the only way they can travel together for security reasons. I was wondering if anyone could post a statement here, made by Glenn Beck, that was NOT a lie. Beck is a self-proclaimed "entertainer." So we could look at his prevarications as spice to enliven his tales. The problem with compulsive or habitual liars is that they offer lies so consistently that they are not to be believed in matters of serious import. I recall that Beck lied when he said that a certain author, admired by Obama and H. Clinton, proclaimed a belief in "proletarian revolution." Beck read an ostensible quotation from a foreword in a well known book. It didn't take people long to do the research and discover that Beck's claim was a complete fabrication (not simply a colorful exaggeration). LIes designed to tarnish a person's reputation (McCarthy type lies, which associate a person with "communism" or "the enemy") are among the most heinous.
ANOTHER LIE BY BECK, which disqualifies him an interpreter of history. Beck claimed that the Washington Monument

IN FACT, the truth is that the did not stop building the monument during the civil war, which began in 1865.

Concerning the inscription, "Laus Deo" (Praise God), it is important to note that the inscription is not visible to visitors or to people on the ground. (Do a google search under images, typing in Laus Deo and Washington Monument. You won't be able to see the inscription at all). Why is the inscription so hard to see? My own belief is that the statement "Laus Deo" is not intended to be political. It is a subtle, almost invisible acknowledgement of the Deity. Most of the founders of the Republic believed that religion was a private matter. Glenn Beck mixes up religion and politics in way which would shame the founders. Most of Beck's diatribes are about politics, and they contain outright lies. Perhaps the worst lie is his claim that he seeks to foster unity and a non-partisan view of religion. Beck's entire approach to America's ills is a lie, through and through. He is Father Coughlin and Joe McCarthy, with the sincerity of Elmer Gantry. Unfortunately, very few (if any) of Beck's supporters know who Elmer Gantry is. None will know who Father Coughlin is, in all likelihood. One wonders if the Mormon hierarchy will eventually do to Glenn Beck what the Catholic Church did to Coughlin. ("Tell him to shut up").
The problem with that idea is that the Mormon church has much less control over Beck and his rants than the Roman Catholic church had over Coughlin in his day.
I guess you lied as well, since the Civil War did NOT begin in 1865.
