Video Game Mash-up: Returns and Revivals

The gaming bees have been buzzing with the coming of a sequel for the long-awaited series and quite possibly a wonderful revival to a forgotten one.

Joystiq reports the return of the underrated game series The Longest Journey. Many gamers are familiar with the adventure game taking place in the alternate future with a magical twist, but news of the third game Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey actually makes fans rejoice and wait in anticipation. Gaming developer Funcom released Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, the second game in the series, back in 2006 for the Xbox, which had introduced the story's second playable protagonist Zoë Castillo with April Ryan being the first. The ending left many players wondering what will happen next in this series.

In a video update, Martin Bruusgaard, Lead Designer of Red Thread Games, promises a flowing gameplay and a stunningly remastered and explorable environments, while keeping the familiar point-and-click aspect for the fans. Unfortunately, players will have to wait until November 2014 to enjoy this game, but they can still get their hands on a bundle of the two games on Steam for $24.99.

Yu Suzuki has confirmed that he still wants to make Shenmue 3 and is even considering a Kickstarter to fund the game. The first game was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 (for North America) and definitely made many gamers -- at the time -- marvel at the impressive new gaming experience with open-world exploration in the late-1980s Japan.

However, news regarding potential for a sequel has been rocky. Suzuki needs to obtain the rights to the game from Sega, even though the franchise was created by him. Another issue might have to be the games themselves, for they are heavily story-driven, which might not attract new gamers to the franchise.
