Elizabeth Smart gave a short motivational speech yesterday at The Women’s Conference in Long Beach, California. The seminar was called Overcoming the Unimaginable. This was the first time Smart has spoken in public since testifying against David Brian Mitchell’s hearing on October 1st.
"We all have our trials and we all experience hard times, but I don't think that we should ever let it disable us from doing what we want to do," Smart said.
"I know that we do have angels on the other side of ... what we don't see. We are never truly left alone in our darkest hour," she said.
Smart was 14 when she was kidnapped from her own bed in Salt Lake City, Utah in June of 2002. She was found nine months later on the streets of Salt Lake City hidden in a long robe with her alleged kidnapper Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee.
On October 1, 2009 Elizabeth Smith testify at a competency hearing for Mitchell. Smart testified that Mitchell raped her three to four times a day during her nine month captivity and that he tied her to a pole. To read about her testimony, click here. Smart called Mitchell "evil, wicked, manipulative, sneaky, slimy, selfish, greedy, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God."
The Jaycee Dugard case is similar to Elizabeth Smart. Jaycee Dugard was held captive for 18 years and bore two children from her kidnapper. Dugard and her daughters have been reunited with her family since August, and has been trying to adjust to her new life. Dugard has been making plans to go back to school.
