Video: Amanda Knox lawyer tears up and makes plea to jury in closing arguments

The Amanda Knox trial is wrapping up and her attorney made an emotional plea during the closing arguments Wednesday in Amanda Knox’s defense, "We suffer at the memory of Meredith. But we look at the future of Amanda," Luciano Ghirga said in her defense, and he quoted Amanda when he said, “Meredith was my friend.”

Knox, 22, an American has been accused of brutially stabbing her roommate, Meredeith Kercher in November of 2007 in their Italy home.

Prosecutors stated that Meredith Kercher was killed when Knox told two men to hold Kercher down and they sexually assaulted and slashed her throat. Knox's boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, 26, and a friend Rudy Guede are the two other accused.

Ghirga came to tears at the end of his statement and asked the jury to acquit Knox. He said that her mother and family asked him to make that request. Another lawyer for the defense said that the prosecution didn’t show evidence for a guilty verdict, and there was no motive.

Ghirga said that jury needed to be "morally certain of their decision." "If you have the minimum of doubts, you must absolve this young girl - a girl that is merely 22 years old," he said.

Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini accused Ghirga of "lynching" the Italian police, and defended their work when he responded to Ghirga's statements. Mignini asked for life sentences for Knox and Sollecito if found guilty. Initially Mignini focused on a sexual twisted affair, and then changed his focus to a hatred between the roommates.

The police made numerous mistakes on this case and that was brought to light in the trial, and the trail of evidence was difficult to follow. The defense pointed out all of those mistakes, even with DNA evidence.

The jury will begin deliberations on Friday, after the prosecution is done with their statements.
Knox and Sollecito have been in jail for two years and both deny any role in the murder, their trial will began in January 2010.
