Adam Lambert visited a Los Angeles area middle school this week to deliver a private performance for some lucky students, and he came bearing gifts.

The American Idol Season 8 runner up hand-delivered supplies to the Contemporary Rock Music class at Belvedere Middle School in East Los Angeles Thursday. Adam Lambert raised funds for the school to buy guitars, 1,000 packs of guitar strings and high powered batteries for electronic keyboards through an organization called "DonorsChoose.org".

A few weeks before the Lambert's 28th birthday, he put out a request to fans and friends to donate items to needy schools rather than buying him birthday presents. Adam Lambert's fans donated more than $300,000 worth of art, music and theater supplies to needy programs across the country.

Adam Lambert surprised about 45 students hand-selected to meet him in person in the Belvedere Middle School classroom. The students had been practicing Lambert's hit "Whataya Want from Me" as part of their class, but had no idea they would eventually be performing the song with the American Idol superstar.

Many schools in the Los Angeles Unified School district have been stripped of their art and music programs altogether due to budget cuts. Belvedere Middle School Contemporary Rock Music program is one of the few left in the city. As many as 40% of Los Angeles Unified School District students will drop out before graduation.
