Video: 93 Rhode Island high school teachers fired

93 Rhode Island high school teachers fired.  Tuesday night, a school board in Rhode Island voted 5-2 in favor of firing every teacher at the school, and Central Falls High School lost 93 people including teachers, the principals and three assistant principals. They will lose their jobs at the end of the school year.

Central Falls High School has been struggling for quite some time and the graduation rate at the school is at about 48%. Half of the students at the high school are failing every class. The district was unable to reach an agreement with the teachers’ union, and asked them specifically to spend additional time to help raise student test scores. The teachers agreed to some of the terms but did not agree to others.  The board was required to give them notice by March 1st and they felt they had no choice but to let the teachers go. And under Rhode Island guidelines they could do it.

A spokesman for the union stated increases shown at the high school over the past two years, specifically a 3% increase in math scores and 21% increase in reading scores as a defense. But only 7% of the 800 students are proficient in math and 55% are skilled in reading.

The high school is one of the lowest-performing schools in Rhode Island, according to CNN. The poverty level in the immediate community is low, and the average salary is about $22,000. 65% of the students are Hispanic, and English is not their first language.

Teachers at Central Falls High School in Rhode Island were encouraged to re-apply for their job; the school board mentioned that some may be re-hired.  See the video below for the full story.

In a related case, ABC 4 in Salt Lake City reported a few days ago that 250 teachers will be let go after this school year in the Jordan School district because of drastic budget cuts. Several after school programs were also cancelled.

Are the students and parents blameless in this matter? You can lead a horse to water but you can not make the horse drink.

I am a secondary teacher in Texas and I worry, sweat, fret and work to help students succeed in class and in life. This does not appear to be an answer, just a reaction to a longtime problem.
