John Edward Jones died Wednesday in the Bob Push’s area of the Nutty Putty Caves near Salt Lake City after being trapped for 28 hours. Jones was part of a group of 11 potholers, and three hours into their exploration, Jones became wedged in an L-shaped crevice and found himself upside down.
After a few hours of blood rushing to his head and his heart trying to pump that blood upside down he began to get incoherent.
The crevice Jones found himself in was about 18” wide and 10” high and was am extremely tight space to fit into. Jones was unable to move forward or backwards to get himself out.
Almost 100 people attempted to get him out over the next 24 hours, and at one point they were able to get Jones a little more sideways and they thought they would be able to get him out, but then Jones slipped back into the same spot he was originally in. After 28 hours of being stuck, John Edward Jones’ body gave up, he lost consciousness and he died shortly before midnight on Wednesday.
Jones and his wife were expecting the birth of their second child in June of next year. Jones was a second year medical student who wanted to be a children’s heart surgeon. See video below of story.
This is the fifth rescue at the Nutty Putty Caves in the last few years, and this is the first death. To view a photo of the map of Nutty Putty Caves, click here.
