2013 Fleer Retro Marvel takes a page out of Upper Deck's successful basketball and football Retro releases and brings to collectors a nostalgic trip of the great comic book trading card releases of the past. The premium release is loaded with plenty of card designs and inserts that harken back to the days when Impel/Skybox and Fleer (when it was a non-Upper Deck brand) owned the Marvel license, including the classic Marvel Universe Series 1, 2 and 3, Fleer Ultra X-Men and much more.
But it isn't all retro as the product also includes autograph cards from famous artists like Mark Bagley, Adam Kubert and Arthur Adams, one-of-a-kind sketch cards and inserts and parallels from Fleer sports releases like Quickstrike, Intimidation Nation and the famous Precious Metal Gems.
Seen as a novelty release when they first dropped, Fleer Retro Marvel quickly caught on with collectors when they saw the value that was coming from each box. Unlike in sports releases, the autographs and 1/1s were not the main draw of the product but rather the rare inserts that were legitimately tough to pull from packs. Singles for sets like TI-22 and Hardware were actually selling for more than an artist autographs.
The big hit from Fleer Retro Marvel however was the Precious Metal Gems, a basketball staple that has become popular for its eye-catching luminescent foil design. It isn't uncommon to see PMG green parallels sell for double or even triple what a box of the product will go for, with characters like Spider-Man, Wolverine and Deadpool being the biggest hits of all. Even the easier blue and red parallels can for big money if the character is especially desirable which may or may not have to do if the character has a featured role in the live-action Marvel Comics movies.
