Vidal Sassoon became a household name in the 60's creating perfect, asymetrical cuts that went perfectly with the mod clothing of designers like Mary Quant. He went on to become a commercial giant by putting his name on shampoo and hairdryers. A new film, three years in the making chronicles his career.
On February 9th,Vidal Sassoon The Movie premiered here in New York to a star studded audience, who also went to the afterparty at Michael's. Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford, Grace Coddington, and Rachel Roy. Hairstylist Frederic Fekkai and celebrity dermatologist Dr. Lisa Airan were there as well, sipping cocktails by Remy Martin & Cointreau created especially for the event. The party was hosted by Andre Leon Talley, Hamish Bowles, and Alexandra Kotur.
Vidal Sassoon broke the mold with his boldly technical style, and became one of the most influential hairdressers in the world. This inluence can still be seen today; think of the precise bob on Lady Gaga's March 2011 Vogue cover. He was raised in a orphanage and led a life far from what we would associate with a man of his fame.
Vidal Sassoon The Movie joins a long line of fashion documentaries such as Valentino:The Last Emperor, Lagerfeld Confidential, The September Issue, and the upcoming Bill Cunningham documentary Bill Cunningham New York. The film opens to the public at the Village East Theater on February 11th and will run until February 17th. There will be q&a sessions after the Friday and Saturday 7:40pm showings with Mr. Sassoon and director Craig Tepper. The producers of the film, Jackie Gilbert Bauer and Michael Gordon, will also be in attendance. The sessions will be moderated by Nigel Smith of Indiewire.
