The Metro Detroit Pet Expo opens on Friday, November 21 at 12:00 p.m. at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. This annual three-day weekend event includes entertainment, contests, rescue groups, and over 100 vendors with items for pets and pet lovers, just in time for your holiday shopping. A microchip clinic and pet pictures with Santa will be offered at the Pet Expo.
Exhibitors
Enjoy performances throughout the weekend from groups such as Rock-N-Roll K9s, a canine freestyle dance team, and Ultimate Air Dogs, a dock-diving group. Shelli Kizner of ClearMark Clicker Training with give demonstrations on force-free, positive-reinforcement-based training methods. Various veterinary, training, and rescue groups will have information, fund-raising, and adoption booths, including Mid-Michigan Boxer Rescue. Vendors will have products ranging from pet food and supplies to unique gifts for pet lovers.
Victoria Stilwell
Trainer Victoria Stilwell, of the popular TV show "It's Me or the Dog", will make a special guest appearance on Saturday, November 20. Stilwell will give a training presentation and demonstration at 2:00 p.m., and will sign copies of her book, It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet, at 5:00 p.m. following a short question-and-answer session. Presentation seating and book signing are on a first-come, first-served basis, and the book signing is limited to the first 40 people in line.
Pets Welcome, Contests Offered
The Metro Detroit Pet Expo welcomes well-behaved, sterilized, adult pets that are current on their vaccinations. Pets must be on a short (no more than six-foot) lead--flexible leashes are not allowed. Pet owners must sign a release form and bring proof of vaccinations. The following contests will be held at the main stage throughout the event: Pet Costume Contest (Friday, 5:00 p.m.); Amazing Pet Trick Contest (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.); Longest Tail Contest (Sunday, 12:00 p.m.); and Ugliest Dog Contest (Sunday, 2:00 p.m.). Pets must be pre-registered for the contest, and should arrive at the main stage at least 15 minutes prior to the contest start time. The rules and regulations stipulate that the pet's owner must be the one that shows the pet.
Admission
Admission for the Metro Detroit Pet Expo is $10 for ages 12 and up and $5 for kids age 6-12. Children 5 years of age and under are admitted free. You can save $2 off the admission price by bringing a bag or can of pet food with you to the event. The Rock Financial Showplace typically charges a parking fee of $5 per car, per day.
