Victoria’s Secret fashion show; supermodels workout secrets revealed

The annual Victoria’s Secret fashion runway show is probably the most difficult part of a models job. Why? Because each Victoria’s Secret angel has to walk in heels and lingerie down a runway in front of millions of viewers watching from home, talk about pressure. Getting ready takes months and now the models workout secrets are revealed by the trainers responsible for getting them into shape.

Famous Victoria Secret supermodels like Lindsay Ellingson, Candice Swanepoel, Karlie Kloss and Lily Aldridge aren’t always in runway shape; heck they’re only human. So when the annual fashion show comes around the angels turn to their trainers, Justin Gelband and former professional ballerina, Mary Helen Bowers, to whip them into shape. But these workouts may not be what you expect.

“Everybody thinks these girls are born with a gift,” said Gelband, who recently spoke with the New York Daily News. He personally trained Kloss, Heatherton and Swanepoel before the show. “Maybe they’re more beautiful than the average person, but that doesn’t mean that their bodies don’t start at a 4, 6 or 8.”

The workouts themselves are a full time job for the Victoria’s Secret models who have to exercise 6-days per week. Gelband’s workouts are based around interval training but don’t include any weights, machines or props. Instead, his 1-hour personal training sessions feature intense kickboxing, tons of crunches, in addition to lengthening and strengthening exercises like Pilates. “Candice loves working on her butt,” says Gelband.

On the other hand, Bowers works with each model to “micro-sculpt” their muscles leading up to the big event. Her workouts are comparable to The Ballet Physique method. “We’re tailoring their workouts at the very end based on what their outfits are, “said Bowers. “They’re getting their final fittings those last two weeks, so we know how much you’re seeing of their stomach and their butt and their legs versus how do they feel when they put the wings on. We’re able to micro-sculpt those muscles.”

Another aspect, that many don’t realize, is that those angel wings that play a large role in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show are heavy. “These models need all their strength,” says Bowers. “The wings are really heavy, and they’re wearing like 6-inch heels and the runway’s covered in glitter. Just walking down the runway is a workout in itself.”
