Victoria Osteen, wife of mega church pastor Joel Osteen, gave an eerie message to the Lakewood Church and the millions of followers watching about a week ago. The message was pertaining to why we go to church, and what worship really mean. To any true believer in Christ, one would think that this message would be fairly simple. As a believer, we know that the beginning of knowledge is to fear God (Proverbs 1:7). We are not to fear in the sense of being afraid of Him, but we are to fear in the sense of reverencing Him; honoring Him and showing the respect that is due Him because He is Sovereign.

God is not coming back for a physical church building, but for a living church; for we are the church. Those that are living for God, and that has sacrificed their lives to God. Paul tells us that we are to die daily from flesh, because it is the flesh that is in opposition to God. We all have a dual nature; we have flesh (self) and spirit (God). The original purpose for the creation of man was worship. Psalms 150:6 says, “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD.” We also see in Revelations 4:8 that the angels worship God day and night. Worship is what we do to show honor to our King.

Here is a direct quote from Victoria Osteen: “I just want to encourage every one of us to realize when we obey God, we’re not doing it for God; I mean, that’s one way to look at it; we’re doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we’re happy. That’s the thing that gives Him the greatest joy. So, I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy. When you come to church, when you worship Him, you’re not doing it for God really; you’re doing it for yourself, because that’s what makes God happy. Amen?”

Do you see this blasphemous statement? First of all, when we define the word “worship”, we find that it means to reverence, glory, praise, and/or exalt. So, in other words, Victoria Osteen is proclaiming that it is more important for you to EXALT yourself rather than the Holy God of Israel, because at the end of the day, God just wants you to be happy. She is proclaiming that it is more important for us to care about self versus God.

In the bible, we are commanded to worship. Psalms, 99:5, “Exalt the Lord our God; worship at His footstool! Holy is He!” Revelations 14:7, “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Luke 4:8, “And Jesus answered and said unto him, get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

These are just a few scriptures, but there are many more. What Victoria Osteen is saying totally contradicts the Holy Word of God. This is a New Age Doctrine that has been going forward by many pastors. If you are not careful, you will easily fall into this trap. We must be wise as serpents. We must study to show ourselves approved. We must be discerning of the spirit of man, because Matthew gives us warning about this very thing. In Matthew 24:11, it says, “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” 1 Timothy 4:1, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”

This New Age Doctrine is being adopted by the philosophies of Anton LaVey, leader of the Church of Satan. He taught that all people should do what thou wilt; which shall be the whole law. Meaning, it's all about doing it YOUR way instead of GOD'S way. The scriptures have prepared us for such a time as this. Many are hypnotized and seductively induced by the false doctrines that are being spewed out of the mouths of some of these pastors. We must wise up people! Everybody don’t have the spirit of Jesus Christ on the inside of them! Matthew 7:22-23, "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
