The combination of elation and exhaustion seemed to overtake Victoria Azarenka in her final set and match point, beating out Li Na. Azarenka won the Australian Open, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Na, retaining her status as No.1 seed.
This win earns Azarenka back-to-back crowns, in 2012 she won her maiden Grand Slam crown in Melbourne. Serena Williams moves to No. 2.
Jan. 26, USA Today reports, "Azarenka buried her face in her hands after match point, overcome with emotion. At the end, she called it a "difficult two weeks." Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things."
"I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy," she said. "She suffered to win that one," said her coach, Sam Sumyk. "Maybe that explains the tears."
Azarenka, 23, 6' feet tall, blond, and was born in Minsk, Belarus,. Azarenka relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, at age-16. She is Belarusian and speaks English, Belarusian and Russian. Azarenka turned Pro in 2003, and her accumulative prize earnings are nearly $19 million.
