Surely, this is yet another entry into the files of Unbelievers Compliment Christianity. This is because PhD in physics and Atheist activist Victor Stenger, in typical Atheist activist style, wrote an article besmirching only one single religion that is, of course, Christianity. In his article How to Debate a Christian Apologist he proves, yet again, that Atheism is, primarily, an anti-Christian support group.
See this hyperlink Victor Stenger for previous reports about the physicist turned debate coach. Note how he lays out his premise by beginning his article by playing the oh shucks card as he and his ilk are just not
Recently there seems to have been a rash of debates between atheists and Christian apologists. Of course, we had the much-ballyhooed debate between Ken Ham and Bill Nye on creationism versus evolution ("Ham on Nye"), which only served the purpose of giving Ham's ridiculous beliefs attention they did not deserve. And, it got Ham enough money from donors an taxpayers to complete his theme park.
However, most debates involve an atheist scientist, philosopher, or former clergyperson against a Christian theologian or clergyperson. Occasionally we have an atheist layperson against a clergyperson. It is very unwise for a layperson to debate a theologian.
In the latest debates I have watched, as well as many others I have witnessed over the years, including several of my own, the Christians are almost always very smooth and well prepared. The reason is not that their arguments are so persuasive but that they generally have spent years in front of religion classes, lecture audiences, and church congregants, polishing the same old arguments.
Let us attempt to lay it out nice and balanced-like.
Recently there seems to have been a rash of debates between atheist apologists and Christian apologists.
Note that since Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould had the brilliant idea of encouraging their comrades to refuse to debate whomever they saw fit to label as “creationists” they have used the excuse that they, sitting as they do atop their imitation ivory towers, give too much credit to those people when they engage them in the time honored act of actually debating ideas. Thus, the “attention they did not deserve” comment.
Ah, the ol' follow the money routing as “it got Ham enough money from donors an taxpayers to complete his theme park” but apparently Bill Nye did it out of pure love and has refused to follow up in any way that would get him a single penny.
Then comes the mia culpa as, or so we are supposed to believe, “most debates”; wait, where is the scientific data? “Most” can be 99% or 51% or anything in between. Well, never mind that; behold a scientist is speaking, so we cannot expect actual details, data and evidence.
Note his extremely odd statement that “Christians are almost always very smooth and well prepared” but just what is keeping atheist scientist, philosopher, or former clergypersons from preparing for a debate?
Well, the reason, or so we are supposed to think, is not, mind you, that their arguments are so persuasive but that they generally have spent years in front of religion classes, lecture audiences, and church congregants, polishing the same old arguments.
But, by the way, atheist scientist, philosopher, or former clergypersons generally have spent years in front of science classes, lecture audiences, and church congregants, polishing the same old arguments.
So what gives? Well, the Atheist arguments are not persuasive because they are false and faulty. This is why the bulk of Atheist activists and converts are very young; they convert based on rebellion and being promised lack of ultimate accountability and lack of judgment.
Of course, Victor Stenger himself is in desperate need of debate advice as can be seen from his first debate with William Lane Craig (see video here) and his second debate with William Lane Craig (see video here). In fact, see the attached video for Craig’s reply to Stenger’s article which is simply titled How to Debate a Christian Apologist.
Now, poor advice is one thing but note that Victor Stenger gives himself away not only due to his general anti-Christian activism but by exposing that Atheism is not about evidence or lack thereof but about hatred of the God whom they know exists:
But what makes Jesus one of the most unpleasant characters in all of fiction, along with the Old Testament God Yahweh (quoting Richard Dawkins), is that he dooms everyone on Earth who does not worship him to an eternity in hell. The six million Jews who died in the holocaust just moved from one furnace to another.
Indeed, he is just parroting another anti-Christian activist who wrote nothing about any God except for YHVH. He states that Jesus is a fictional characters because he takes the most unscholarly view that Jesus never even existed. Well, maybe a list of Two Centuries Worth of Citations to Jesus’ existence will get him on his way towards admitting historical facts.
But then again, he is basing his views, hedging his bets, on getting away it and admitting facts will only get in his way.
Note that Jesus is said to be “one of the most unpleasant characters” because “he dooms everyone on Earth who does not worship him to an eternity in hell.” Well, at least he understand that Bible more than many modern pseudo-preachers in pseudo-churches.
However, he is not elucidating that this is not merely about worship but about forgiveness of sin. Jesus’ message was not that there is only one way but that there is a way. Stenger knows about it and rejects it thus, he has chosen his own fate. It may be unpleasant but if it is true then it is true and if it is not then; what are you complaining about?
Well, on his view what he is complaining about is bio-chemical neural reactions occurring within the haphazardly random chance mutation evolved gray matter of a temporarily existing organism which sits atop a spinning rock in the universe’s backwaters. That is what it comes down to in an Atheist universe; people who believe in Jesus do so due to bio-chemical neural reactions which came about as a Darwinian survival mechanism. In fact, as noted in the article Evolutionary argument for Christianity or, why Atheists should convert; since theism represent the majority of the world’s population and Christianity is the majority of those then, logically and biologically, Christianity is the most successful Darwinian survival mechanism and so, all Atheists should convert.
They statement about “The six million Jews who died in the holocaust” is just his way of attempting to bypass the thought process of anyone who might actually challenge his views and getting them to react emotionally to his emotive bomb. It is shameful to attempt to buttress his own hatred and lack of reasoned discourse with emotional reactions.
In the end, Victor Stenger decided to forego writing within his field of physics and decided to write an Atheist Catechism; his grade? F!
Can’t wait to see his article about how to argue with Muslims or anyone else for that matter. Of course, we will be waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting…………
