Vice Mayor Nguyen attends Job Corps' Asian Heritage Festivities

San Jose, CA (January 31) -- The second Asian-American member of the San Jose City Council and current Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen attended the San Jose Job Corps' Asian Heritage lunch activities today as its guest speaker at the center's 11-acre campus located at East Hills Drive, this city.

Vice Mayor Nguyen, in her speech, stressed the value of Asian culture as many of the city's Asian immigrants exercise their new role in the community.

She was received by Center Director Leslie Gilroy; Deputy Center Director Chris Allen; Career Development Director Philip George; and Community Business Liaison Chandra Brooks.

During the lunchtime activities, a chopstick game and Chinese yo-yo demonstration were held; a fashion show featuring various Asian countries; Tagalog (Philippines) song rendition by guest singer Pamela Serrano, PNC Music Company; and instructional karate by selected Job Corps students.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, the other day, had a great 45-minute visit to the center. She met with Center staff and officers of the Student Government Association (SGA).

The students, according to Center Director Leslie Gilroy, "... did a fantastic job in sharing with her how important Job Corps is to them and the youth of the future".
