VH1's Michelle Betts talks about her 'Tough Love' experience

“I didn’t come to do the show to be a crazy person and be on TV. I’ve been single for five years; something’s wrong. I am going to take everything I can in to change my life.”

That was what Michelle Betts told me during our interview this past week. Betts, who is apart of the cast of "Tough Love Miami" which airs Sundays, is seeking help with relationships on the hit VH1 show. The cast is going through a dating boot camp run by matchmaker Steve Ward.  The camp has tasked them with everything from during a runway show to writing letters to their mothers on how they effect their relationships with men. The latter was emotional for Betts, but got support from fellow cast member Brigette.

“When I was going through my (letter to my) mom…Brigette was sitting right next to me and saw me getting teary eyed,” Betts observed. “She literally put her hand on my leg and said ‘I’m right here for you.’ It was just a wonderful moment to reach out and do that for me.”

Ward has put the women through their emotional paces throughout the series, but each has had some progress. Betts had a revelation in the latest episode.

“(I told Steve Ward) if I am in front of a guy who I am not interested in, I can be myself and be great. If you put a great guy in front of me I freeze. When I said that with cameras rolling in front of Steve, I was like ‘Oh my gosh, I have to stop this! I can’t be so scared.’”

“Yes, I have been hurt before, and we all have. But not every guy is going to hurt me. That was a pretty big moment. Steve called me out on that and it really, really helped me.”

Although Betts has been somewhat under the radar when it comes to fairing greatly or poorly in the past episodes, she says to expect some more insights coming into the last few episodes.

“A lot of the people would ask me ‘Well you seem to be doing a good job’,” Betts commented. “I would just tell them ‘My stuff is at the end of the series.’”
