2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors
VH1 should really consider renaming it's Hip Hop Honors televised show to something more reflective of it's honorees. They seem to honor and highlight East Coast artists prominently and definitely have an affection towards every artist that comes out of New York.
The show should be renamed something like New York Hip Hop Honors. Yes, they have honored a handful of West Coast Rappers such as Too Short, Cypress Hill, and 2Pac, but surprisingly Atlanta Super Hip Hop Duo Outkast, who has had one album go Diamond Status and sell 10 Million records, has never been honored.
What gives VH1? I believe the people that run this show live, breathe, and love New York City like every other New York rapper. When in New York and on the club scene, you will quickly come to see how everyone who lives in and around the Tri-State area of New York, has a incestuous love affair with New York City. In the clubs, that's all the DJ shouts out over the top of the records spinning. They give so many shout outs to New York it makes you sick if you're not from there.
But this love affair with New York city is what makes VH1 biased when it comes to the Hip Hop Honors. They love New York so much that they have such a myopic view of hip hop and rap music and cannot see the forest through the trees. They cannot see what Master P did in hip hop which almost no one else on the list of honorees did, sell 75 million records. It is hard to sell 75,000 units let alone 75 Million units in total. What about Cee-Lo Green formerly of Goodie Mob. There are countless others in Atlanta, the South, and the West Coast that should be honored. VH1 needs to broaden it's scope of artist selections for their honorees and include some of the other great artists out there in other regions of the country.

What you are depicting is record sales as the reason Master P and Outkast should be honored? That's a problem. Run DMC didn't do Master P numbers but should definitely be honored before an Outkast. Get your head right and quit seeing a regional bias. See what the awards are. They are honoring hip hops foundation and progress so naturally it's going to start in New York and have some west coast honorees sprinkled in. The south has really only come to the forefront in the last 8-9 years at best. RockNRoll hall of fame aren't putting in contemporaries right away based on record sales because careers have to prove themselves with longevity and impact.
I was with you until you said "Master P". Outkast SHOULD be honored though.
R u serious? Ur saying whoever sell da most albums should be honored. Wow u must not know nothing I mean nothing about hip. Nothing!!
Damn u have no hip hop knowledge at all. U shouldn't be able to talk or write anything about hip hop. Master P? Lmao! Outkast should be honored but not 4 selling dat many units it's cuz what they contributed to the culture.
Calling this in from india: While i love Outkast, i still think they have a longer way to go before receiving Hip-hop honoree status. It's more about how much they have contributed to the culture at the awards so they'll probably be there in a few years. Too Short and Cypress Hill have been making music for a longer period.
O yea ur from Atlanta. U shouldn't know nothing about hip hop.
You damn right 100 percent... all these dudes above must be some young kats... cause the south toke over secound the number one Rap Hustla in the game started... Did yall know P sold 100,000 units outta his own car in richmond cali..then came back to new orleans and sold over 75 million records and he did it INDEPENDENT... no major.... respect the truth... P got black balled after 200 casue the majors took over all radio stations and mad sure nothing from nl got love.... the truh TruTankSoldiers google it
Heads up Gerard Spinks and commenters,
I think you should really do your research concerning the criteria for the honorees. In addition to that, some of the acts that the producers wanted to honor, declined their invitation.
Also I think you should put into perspective the time factor of some acts compared to other as opposed to how many records were sold. Basically my point is that there are a number of factors that contribute to who is honored than regional bias.
I believe Nelson George discussed these issues a while back, you're addressing a while back. You can easily google it.

What about E-40? He may not have sold as many records or be as famous as alot of the artists that have been honored in the past but he 's definetly contributed alot to the game. Alot of the slang used today he made up years ago. The Bay Area never get the respect it deserves.
