The Borinquen Post 508 celebrated Mother’s Day Saturday night at their location in West Covina with a dinner and a dance entertained by the live music of Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad and by the recorded tunes of DJ Papo El Salsero.
The Boriquen Post 508 was chartered as an American Legion post in 1954. Their name, Borinquen, was given in honor of the island out of which many of the members are from - be it by birth or by ancestry - Puerto Rico. The post is, nonetheless, likewise joined by veterans of varied backgrounds. Its only true requirement is to have actively served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force of the United States, or US Merchant Marines any time since World War I to the present and to have been honorably discharged or separated.
Present at the dance were at least a dozen veterans. Out of them four served in World War I. One out of those four attended with his lady of 66 years, a dame he met on Times Square upon his return from the war. The leader of the Salsa band performing, Johnny Polanco, is himself a veteran and a member of Borinquen 508.
The proceeds from the event were to benefit the post. With an evening full of veteran camaraderie, a few hundred people celebrated their families’ matriarchs with the things they hold dearest to their hearts: the music and the food of their homeland, and the honor of their military service.
