One of America's most sobering celebrations is Veteran's Day -- especially for San Diegans.
Veteran's Day is, after all, a day to remember those who've given up their own freedom to fight for ours.
Marines and military of all kinds are, for the most part, heroes. America would not--and could not--be the amazing country it is without their role of protection.
Southern California's (including San Diego) Camp Pendleton is the main West Coast base of the United States Marines Corps. Many fine men and women have trained in this facility. Many have raised their families there--at least for a season.
Today, just in time for Veteran's Day, one family were joined together after being apart for some 13 months. Navy Sailor, Fire Controlman First Class Richard Schaeffer was commissioned home to join his wife, daughter Morgan (who he met at school to her total delight and surprise) and his two twin boys who are now walking. A happy, happy picture of a military family.
Alas, San Diego is also recently reminded that not all military stories have such a happy ending (or middle, or whatever...).
One San Diego Camp Pendleton based marine, Second Lt. Robert M. Kelly, was recently killed in Afgahnistan.
22-year-old Lance Cpl. Patrick Thomas Poteat was given at least 15 years behind bars for killing his wife because he disapproved her loose career choice. (She was an erotic dancer.) They were based in San Diego.
Just a few years ago in Vista, North County, a former marine killed a woman for catching him in theft.
Veteran's Day is a time to reflect and remember the hardships and stresses that accompany military life. It is a time to be grateful for the freedom we have. And it is a time to thank those who fight for our safety.
Some local communities and restaurants have found a way to thank veterans by providing free meals.
In our neighboring community of Orange County a special live TV event is being held at the TBN studios honoring both veterans and Orphans First. More info or to requst free tickets, send an email here.
May our military know they are loved and feel blessed for their service to America.
