A suspect was killed and a veteran Fulton County police officer wounded in a shootout Thursday morning.
So far, police have not released the name of the man who was killed and they have declined to release the name of the wounded officer who has since been released from Grady Memorial Hospital.
The shooting happened about 8:20 a.m. Thursday at 4608 White City Road near College Park, according to Fulton County police.
Officers were on routine patrol in the area when they encountered a “suspicious individual,” police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said. She could not say why the man appeared suspicious.
The officer, who has been with the force for 20 years, was on patrol in the area when he encountered a suspicious individual,” Lester said.
“During that encounter shots were fired, the officer was struck and the perpetrator was deceased at the scene,” Cpl. Lester said.
“The vest he was wearing did save his life and we are grateful that he was wearing his vest,” she said, according to media report.
The GBI was called in to investigate the shooting, which happened just inside I-285, north of Roosevelt Highway.
GBI spokeswoman Ms. Sherry Lang told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution there were two officers involved in the incident, but only one was shot.
She didn’t know if both officers fired their weapons.
The suspect, whose name was being withheld until relatives could be found and notified, had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court, Ms. Lang told the paper. But she released no further details on that warrant.
“The information that we have is that he is not from this area,” Ms. Lang said.
Nearby Harriett Tubman Elementary School on Lakeshore Drive was placed on lockdown as a precaution. The lockdown was lifted late Thursday morning.
